REVIEW – Cathay Pacific : First Class – Hong Kong to Tokyo (B747)

The entrance to the Qantas lounge at HKG is beautifully designed, a glass sliding door separates the airport terminal from the inner sanctum below.
I’m guessing there were no QF flights departing anywhere close to the time we were in there because the place was a ghost town. A beautifully decorated ghost town, with super comfy seats, great F&B and fantastically friendly and competent servers.
We pulled up a couple of stools at the bar and immediately the server asked what he could get for us. I spotted a bottle of Aperol and asked if he could make an Aperol Spritz. No problem. They were so good we ordered two more.
Meanwhile one of the other servers asked if he could get us some food. He apologised for not having a dim sum trolley in operation but said that it was limited to the times around QF departures.
He did say that the char-siu pork was really good. Music to my ears. I absolutely love char-siu pork. He asked if I wanted any salad with it and I told him it was okay. He insisted, saying it would “complete the experience”. He proceeded to plate two delicious looking plates of food for us. He was right, the salad had a great mixture of leaves and pickles in it that worked really well with the sweetness of the pork.
The food and the Aperol Spritz tasted even better than they looked.
The Aussie style Piccolos were great too.
When I said the lounge was close to our gate, I meant it. When we got up from the bar to have a quick look around, this was what we could see from the seating area.
Much like the rest of the lounge, the bathrooms had a very modern and cool design. For a legacy airline QF puts out one of the most consistently fun and fresh products. The design has a lot more in common with Virgin Atlantic than it does with something like United Airlines
On our way out one of the servers offered to grab us a couple of water bottles for our flight. I said to him that we were sure to get water as soon as we boarded but thanked him profusely for his fantastic service.
In future, I think I’ll skip The Wing First Class lounge. If you catch it at the right time of day, the F&B and service are leagues ahead here with Qantas.
I was actually a little sad to leave. Although the sadness soon passed and was replaced by excitement to once again find myself sat in the nose of a 747. There are few places I’d rather be. My friends joke that my favourite place on Earth is not on Earth but 34,000 feet above it in a steel tube. Perhaps this says something about me, although I dare say there are a fair few of you reading, will share a similar preference…
