Four Seasons Marunouchi is a rather confounding property. The location is excellent, the restaurant has three Michelin stars and the service is some of the best I've ever encountered.
Staying in a hotel with only 57 rooms is a true delight, it is hard to overstate how special it is to feel this sense of tranquility and exclusivity in the world's largest city.
The room hardware, on the other hand, is borderline unacceptable and just does not live up to the prices that this property commands...Four Seasons offers an entirely different take on a Kyoto hotel. The property is more of a resort than a city hotel, which in many ways is a trend that we have seen develop globally over the past decade. Four Seasons Bangkok and Rosewood Hong Kong are two prime examples of hotels located within very busy Asian cities and offering a resort-like escape, a sanctuary from the chaos.
Hong Kong and Bangkok are considerably more densely populated than Kyoto though, so I was curious to see how the concept would hold up here and if it would tempt me away from my preference of being more centrally located, in order to enjoy the nightlife...
Located right next to Tokyo Station in the historical heart of the city, Shangri-La Tokyo is a 2023 Forbes Five Star hotel boasting some of the largest room sizes in Tokyo (50sqm / 540 sqft). With elevated views of Tokyo Bay or the Imperial Palace, it offers easy access to Ginza, Nihonbashi and many other main districts of Tokyo, while the nearby bullet train terminal makes it the perfect launching pad for destinations further afield.
Shangri-La Tokyo is currently offering a pair of incredible discounts on bookings made before the 30 November 2024 for stays until the 20 December 2024.
Overall there's no question that Park Hyatt Kyoto is a wonderful property. It is steeped in history, offers wonderful service, it has a rooftop bar, a Michelin starred restaurant and the hardware and finishes are some of the best I've ever seen in any hotel.
However, this hotel is not for everyone. I'm personally not convinced that being this centrally located in Higashiyama is actually particularly desirable or that the trade off in terms of the loss of room size and facilities is worth it. If you have any mobility issues or if you're travelling with children, the interior layout is also sure to become tedious very quickly.
This property originally began its life as a Grand Hyatt and in that context they’ve come a very long way indeed.
I can see why MO was interested in transforming this hotel. The views and the pool are truly unique; no hotel in Santiago compares in this regard. A great number of the rooms have been totally modernised, together with the lobby area.
Having said this, there are a lot of public spaces that are in need of a major renovation if this hotel is truly able to live up to the MO brand’s reputation on the global stage.
