REVIEW – JAL : Business Class – B789 (Sky Suite III) – Jakarta (CGK) to Tokyo (NRT)

Last time we flew the phenomenal Apex Suites on JAL's 777, at the time the seat was the best I'd ever seen in Business Class (now surpassed by Qatar Q Suites and ANA's The Room) but the catering was awful. More specifically there was almost no dinner and no snacking menu on a 7h30m flight! This time I deliberately filled up in the lounge before boarding the 900 Series Dreamliner to Tokyo...

About this site

Welcome to TheLuxuryTraveller.com, a thorough and extensive database of my travel reviews.

I fly over 100,000 miles per year in First and Business class and have reviewed the majority of the world's top onboard products for this blog. If you think that premium cabin travel is out of reach, read on to learn the tricks I use to fly around the world.

I also love visiting luxury hotels and resorts. I have reviewed a wide variety running the range from Park Hyatts and Ritz Carltons bookable with hotel points, right through to some of the world's most exclusive brands like Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental and Aman.

Finally, I am a firm believer in the fact that the purest expression of a culture is in its cuisine. I love to eat and have written at length about some of my favourite restaurants around the globe.

If you want to explore our planet in style, you've come to the right place

REVIEW – Qatar : First Class – Sydney SYD to Doha DOH (A380)

The food and drink weren't quite on the level of JAL or ANA and the seats don't have closing doors like Singapore Suites or Etihad Apartments but the overall product ticks a lot of boxes. On a long haul flight Qatar First Class is exceptional and actually my main criticism is that it is sometimes deployed on routes that don't have the demand for First

REVIEW – Qantas : Business Class – Sydney SYD to Melbourne MEL (A332)

I was disappointed not to get the new seat but for a 95 minute flight this is a pretty fantastic experience. There is in-flight entertainment, a flat(ish) bed, a hot meal, a selection of drinks and the service is proactive and very friendly.

REVIEW – Qatar Airways : Business Class – Doha DOH to Sydney SYD (A380)

The main service was chaotic, no doubt about it.  However, the dine on demand really came into its own when I wanted to set my own schedule and here, much like at the bar, the service was sincere, friendly and professional.

REVIEW – Qatar Airways : Business Class – Oslo OSL to Doha DOH (B787)

Qatar manages to get things so consistently right when others struggle so much. The seat is excellent, the cabin design manages to be simultaneously spacious and private feeling...

TRIP REPORT – The time I flew round trip to Sydney for £1080 in business class

In addition to having one of the best business class products in the sky, Qatar Airways frequently offers some superb airfares between Europe and Asia Pacific. As a promo for the launch of their service to Sydney, Qatar greatly discounted what has long been one of the most expensive routes in the world.

REVIEW – Singapore Airlines : First Class – Barcelona BCN to Sao Paulo GRU (B77W)

I was so happy to be able to share this experience with my Dad. I know how much he appreciates great wine and food and was delighted to be able to just hang out and enjoy his company on such a lengthy daytime flight. I did have minor reservations going into this, a fear that SQ would deliver a second rate experience and the crews would be disinterested, given that the route was due to be scrapped.

TRIP REPORT – D.O.M. and Dom with my Dad. AKA Sao Paulo Seventieth Silliness

Ever since I first got involved in the world of miles and points I've done whatever I could do get my friends and family involved too. It's all well and good travelling everywhere in First Class but as with all of life's great experiences, travel is a pursuit best shared. There's something truly wonderful about being able to go on these rarified, extravagant adventures with other people, especially if those people thought they'd never live to see the day that they set foot in the pointy end of a plane.

REVIEW – Shangri-La Sydney : Deluxe Grand Harbour View Room

Given that we were arriving late into Sydney I decided to look for somewhere close to the Park Hyatt, where we'd be spending the following four nights, without breaking the bank. Sydney is an interesting city for hotels, the area around the Opera House has a number of options around the 350AUD mark: a Four Seasons - which many say is the worst in the entire portfolio; an Intercontinental - which has a Club Lounge that is widely praised but also has some very basic looking rooms and the hotel I decided on: The Shangri-La.

REVIEW – Park Inn by Radisson Copenhagen Airport (CPH)

This hotel is close to the airport and doesn't leave you hostage to a shuttle bus. It also features some quite cool decor both in the rooms and the breakfast area. However the quality of the bedding, food and amenities is definitely low.

REVIEW – The James Chicago : Loft Suite

IMy room was big and comfortable enough that I could easily spend a week there without feeling boxed in. I can imagine that when the winter really starts to bite, it is great having a cozy area in your room where you can kick back, relax and watch movies all evening.

REVIEW – Hyatt Regency London The Churchill : Regency Suite w. Balcony

The Churchill is a very well located hotel which manages to be within a two minute walk of some of London's busiest shopping and dining streets, whilst retaining an air of calm and tranquility overlooking the Portman Square Park. The staff on the club level were universally superb, everybody seemed to be happy to work there and it results in a remarkably pleasant experience. The club lounge itself was a quiet and elegant place to relax and offered a wide variety of high quality food and drink.

The Spectacular Diving and Snorkelling at the Conrad Maldives

I only got into diving relatively recently, having completed my Open Water Diver course in Bali, back in 2014. Since then I have been become absolutely enamoured with the underwater world. Where previously I saw little appeal in staying at beach resorts more than three nights, now my beach stays are longer, so I can spend more time diving and also have enough time to decompress before going up to 36,000ft again!

GUIDE – Eating and Drinking at the Conrad Maldives

The Conrad Maldives has a huge variety of different eating and drinking establishments located across both islands. The most famous of which is Ithaa, the underwater restaurant, which I personally didn't bother with - it is universally derided for being an eye wateringly expensive tourist trap (I did clear a little bit of debris off the glass ceiling for the poor suckers inside, during our orientation dive though ?.) Whilst it is easy enough to drastically reduce the cost of accommodation here, you will realistically need to budget at least an additional $50 per person per day in order to eat lunch and/or dinner. Add to this the cost of the seaplane transfers and you can see that this is still by no means a cheap holiday, even if you are getting it 'cheaper'.

Island comparison 19 - GUIDE - A comparison between the Main Island and Quiet Island at the Conrad Maldives

GUIDE – A comparison between the Main Island and Quiet Island at the Conrad Maldives

One of the major advantages that the Conrad has over other Maldivian resorts is its sheer size. There is undoubtedly a charm in being able to walk around your entire island resort in five minutes but I imagine that after a couple of nights things start to get pretty boring. With ten different bars and restaurants to choose from, all with their own unique identities and cuisines, the Conrad does not suffer from a lack of options. There are also tennis courts, two infinity pools, numerous watersports and several beaches, as well as a house reef. If you are staying in a beach villa you'll be located on the Main Island whilst the majority of the water villas are across the water on the Quiet Island. Either way, you'll probably find yourself moving back and forth between the two islands throughout your stay, although most people tend to have a favourite...
