Concordia lounge Bali -main room

REVIEW – Concordia Lounge : Bali (DPS – Domestic)

I had previously enjoyed a visit to the Garuda Indonesia lounge in this domestic terminal but I had a pretty terrible experience in a third party lounge in the international terminal. So overall my expectations going into this visit were relatively low...

About this site

Welcome to TheLuxuryTraveller.com, a thorough and extensive database of my travel reviews.

I fly over 100,000 miles per year in First and Business class and have reviewed the majority of the world's top onboard products for this blog. If you think that premium cabin travel is out of reach, read on to learn the tricks I use to fly around the world.

I also love visiting luxury hotels and resorts. I have reviewed a wide variety running the range from Park Hyatts and Ritz Carltons bookable with hotel points, right through to some of the world's most exclusive brands like Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental and Aman.

Finally, I am a firm believer in the fact that the purest expression of a culture is in its cuisine. I love to eat and have written at length about some of my favourite restaurants around the globe.

If you want to explore our planet in style, you've come to the right place

cathay business class

REVIEW – Cathay Pacific : Business Class – Hong Kong to London (B77W)

The Cathay reverse herringbone seat is often used as the benchmark for what is acceptable in a business class product nowadays. For a daytime flight I absolutely agree. It supplies storage, comfort and direct aisle access to every single passenger. There really are no bad seats on Cathay, it's nicer to get a window seat of course but it isn't a massive downgrade to end up in a middle seat.

REVIEW – Cathay Pacific : Business Class – Bali to Hong Kong (B772)

Unfortunately for the sector between Bali and Hong Kong we were stuck with a 772, flying the CX regional business class seats - a.k.a. "the asskillers"...

cx 747 upper deck

REVIEW – Cathay Pacific : Business Class – Hong Kong to Bali (B747)

The crew were excited to be there, I was excited to be there and everything just fell into place. The service was spectacular throughout and it was great to have so many interesting conversations with a group of people who seemed to care so deeply about their jobs.

cathay a330 business

REVIEW – Cathay Pacific : Business Class – Singapore to Hong Kong (A330-Regional Config)

Cathay Pacific's soft product is great, the food and beverage were simple and delicious and the dessert trolley was a wonderful touch. The seats are not the best though...

BA Club world A380

REVIEW – British Airways : Club World Business Class – London Heathrow to Singapore (A380)

The beef is still inedible; the coffee is still undrinkable; aisle seats still have no privacy at all and the crew are still capable of being extremely unprofessional.

american business class 777

REVIEW – American Airlines : Business Class – New York JFK to London Heathrow (B77W)

I compared like-for-like. Business class on the 777 with the two joint venture partners that fly the London to New York route. The result was highly damning for BA. The experience on AA was better in just about every way imaginable.

BA business class 777

REVIEW – British Airways : Club World (Business Class) – London Heathrow to Newark (B772)

BA's Club World is a great value product, most of the time it can be had for a fraction of the cost of other carriers' business class fares. There is a reason for this. The cabin decor is drab, bland and uninspired. The only thing about the experience that feels premium

BA Club Europe row 1

REVIEW – British Airways : Club Europe (Business Class) – Oslo to London Heathrow (A320)

There is a definite sense here when flying in intra-European business class, I'm being asked to tell the Emperor how lovely his clothes are. If we all play along we can pretend this is ok. Honestly though it isn't. If you are flying long haul and end up in a short haul Business Class cabin, that's fine. However, if you are looking to splash out in order to try Business Class one time, short haul will leave you deeply underwhelmed.

the edge bali

REVIEW – The Edge, Uluwatu (Bali)

On the surface here things look great but so many aspects of our stay were actively bad that I could never recommend this place to anybody, even at half the price that we paid.

villa amrita bali

REVIEW – Villa Amrita, Ubud (Bali)

I picked a villa with a very impressive website including a full 3D tour and drone videos of the villa's remote setting in the jungle. People don't just build holiday homes in Bali, the island seems to draw people who want to express themselves artistically.

REVIEW – Conrad Koh Samui – Part 1

After an hour long ride through some pitch black roads (including an immensely steep final climb, once on the grounds of the property itself) we finally arrived at the lobby, of one of the crown jewels in the Hilton property portfolio.

busuanga bay lodge

REVIEW – Busuanga Bay Lodge : Palawan, Philippines (Part 1)

Chain hotels don’t exist here, I felt wonderfully liberated, picking a resort on its merits rather than a complex web of external ramifications relating to bonus points, upgrades, qualifying stays etc.

hilton zrh

REVIEW – Hilton Zurich Airport (Relaxation Suite)

The Hilton Zurich Airport is clean and the rooms are decently sized. The bar is lively and functions into the wee hours, so you actually feel like you're on holiday here. The lounge is also very pleasant, with fantastic staff. However, the lack of decent gym facilities and the sanitised feel of the decor, coupled with the distance from the airport terminal, means that I will likely try the Radisson Blu next time. (Note: I did, it was much better!)
