REVIEW – Plataran Komodo: Duplex Pool Villa

Plataran Komodo is a rare type of resort in this day and age. The locally owned Plataran hotel group prides itself on providing authentic experiences throughout Indonesia and has yet to succumb to the temptation of building larger resorts in tall towers...

About this site

Welcome to TheLuxuryTraveller.com, a thorough and extensive database of my travel reviews.

I fly over 100,000 miles per year in First and Business class and have reviewed the majority of the world's top onboard products for this blog. If you think that premium cabin travel is out of reach, read on to learn the tricks I use to fly around the world.

I also love visiting luxury hotels and resorts. I have reviewed a wide variety running the range from Park Hyatts and Ritz Carltons bookable with hotel points, right through to some of the world's most exclusive brands like Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental and Aman.

Finally, I am a firm believer in the fact that the purest expression of a culture is in its cuisine. I love to eat and have written at length about some of my favourite restaurants around the globe.

If you want to explore our planet in style, you've come to the right place

BA A380 First

REVIEW – British Airways : First Class – London to Miami (A380)

BA's A380 First Class offers an experience truly worthy of the name. It is very pleasant, relaxing and comfortable. However BA falls short of being truly spectacular. Given what other airlines are doing with their flagship products these days, it seems a shame that a once great airline isn't aiming to beat the world.

REVIEW – Etihad Airways : Business Class – Abu Dhabi to London (A380)

Much like the First Class Apartments have revolutionised the First Class travel landscape, Etihad's A380 has significantly raised the bar for business class travel. The seat finishes are up there with the fine leather of Singapore's A380 Business Class, the IFE controls and screen are just as sharp as those found on Qatar's Dreamliner...

REVIEW – Etihad Airways : Business Class (Regional) – Malé to Abu Dhabi (A320)

Etihad's short haul product is great for a flight of this length. I was able to relax comfortably, enjoy some good drinks and chat with the relaxed and friendly crew. The food could use a little work, as could the IFE but otherwise this was a fantastic flight.

Etihad business class Jarvis Marcos

REVIEW – Etihad Airways : Business Class (Regional) – Abu Dhabi to Malé (A320)

In stark contrast to Etihad's regional competitor Qatar, there was no separate priority bus for Business Class passengers, we were crammed in like weekday commuters on the Yamanote circle line, with temperatures outside north of 35 degrees. Thankfully, the aircon was working! Still I cant deny it it, I do love bus gates when it's sunny and humid outside. There's an undeniable holiday feeling about the whole process when the weather cooperates.

REVIEW – Etihad Airways : First Class Apartment – London to Abu Dhabi (A380)

From the moment we stepped on board this was a truly magical experience. I truly doubt I will ever top the wow factor of first setting foot in the First Class cabin and seeing the Apartments in the flesh. The service throughout was pro-active, pre-emptive, warm and humorous. Perfectly balanced.

REVIEW – Qatar Airways : Business Class – Doha to Stockholm (B787)

Overall another great flight, if anything this was even better than my first Qatar Business Class experience at the beginning of the trip. The service was extremely attentive, every dish I tasted was superb and every item of F&B which I ordered was in stock whenever I asked..

REVIEW – Qatar Airways : Business Class – Stockholm to Doha (B787)

As I stepped on board my jaw nearly hit the floor. This did not look like any cabin I had ever seen before. It looked more like the shuttle used by the higher orders of an alien society, commuting between their galactic empires:

sofitel Bali

REVIEW – Sofitel Bali : Luxury Ocean View Room with Club Millésime Access

Having club access definitely helped to make the experience feel more personalised but much like the experience of staying in villas without staff, I genuinely feel that choosing places like this means that you miss the best that Bali has to offer.

REVIEW – Soori Bali (formerly Alila Villas Soori)

Staying here actually feels like an exciting architectural experience. To live within the confines of such considered design is a truly wonderful thing.

REVIEW – Villa Kerasan, Ubud (AirBnB)

I can't say enough good things about the decor, the pool and the privacy of the location. The villa is a little way out of town as tends to be the case with a lot of villas near Ubud.

REVIEW – Conrad Singapore (Centennial Suite/ Executive Room)

The service is highly variable and at times borderline incompetent. The decor is bland and unexciting, the facilities are jam packed with guests and the location means that other hotels block the view of the Marina Bay.

indigo helsinki lobby

REVIEW – Hotel Indigo Helsinki

My stay at the Hotel Indigo Helsinki exceeded my expectations. The hotel felt very new and cool, without having the weird try hard feel of some Ws, I also love how small and cosy it felt. Truly a boutique feel, rather than the bland enormity of a regular chain stay. The staff were friendly, proactive and very helpful indeed.

REVIEW – Intercontinental Hong Kong (Deluxe Room)

I felt like a new man after a couple of drinks, a decent meal and a great sleep in Cathay First Class from Tokyo. Upon disembarking from the Airport train at Kowloon station, I looked all over for an ATM. There aren’t any on the level where you exit the […]

REVIEW – Conrad Tokyo (Executive City Twin Room)

The Conrad Tokyo is one of my favourite hotels in the world. The decor is modern, elegant and understated; the service is friendly and effusive without being overly stuffy and formal; the views are fantastic, the beds are super comfy and it's close to HND. There are numerous other luxury options in Tokyo but at this price point The Conrad Tokyo is very hard indeed to argue with.
